When Is a Taxi Not a Taxi? Uber fights to change Taxi industry perception forever

When Is a Taxi Not a Taxi?

The new car service company Uber exposes the idiocy of American cities’ cab regulations.

Uber is a company that’s exciting, innovative, useful, and arguably shouldn’t exist at all. It is a solution to a ridiculous problem created by cartels and overregulation.

“I wanted to be able to press a button and get a classy ride,” explained CEO Travis Kalanick when I asked him to describe Uber’s origin story to me at a launch event for its D.C. branch on Wednesday. So last year Kalanick, Oscar Salazar, and Garrett Camp founded a company originally known as UberCab in San Francisco.

The original name made perfect sense, since at root what Uber provides is a taxi service. Just about every major city in America has, in addition to its heavily regulated cab drivers, a largish fleet of private sedan drivers who do things like take businessmen on pre-arranged drives to and from airports. These limo services generally feature nicer cars, higher prices, and—crucially—different moments of peak demand. Car services get a lot of business weekday mornings, and to a lesser extent in the afternoon rush hour. But very few business travelers need a ride from the airport late on a Friday or Saturday night, which is the time lots of drunk young people want a ride home or maybe to a different bar.

These are two fairly distinct market segments. Airplanes take off and land at defined.........

"Uber Destroyed My Life

I was looking for a way to generate some extra income to supplement my veteran pension, give me something to do with my spare time, and most importantly help make the $409/month payments on my 2013 Chrysler 300. I saw an ad from Uber guaranteeing a very lucrative job as well as great working conditions and a secure future. I hired on as an Uber driver and at first everything they claimed seemed to be mostly true. I was earning decent money (though not as much as their ads promised) and was getting plenty of work. All was good until one day I became involved in an accident. It was only then that I discovered that my personal liability insurance did not cover me because my car was being used for commercial purposes. Uber’s mythical “1 million dollar liability coverage” only covered Uber, not me or my car. I am now being sued by the other driver’s insurance company for thousands of dollars and my smashed Chrysler 300 sits in a junk yard racking up storage fees. On top of all of this, no traditional taxi companies will touch me now because of the accident on my driving record.
I was only trying to earn an honest extra income and now I have no car, just the $409/month payments and a huge pending lawsuit. None of this would have happened if I had been working for a legitimate taxi company that is required by law to provide both a car and commercial insurance for their drivers. If only I had known then what I know now. Uber is a lying, dishonest company that does not give a damn about their drivers and is only out to make a dishonest buck.DO NOT WORK FOR UBER OR THIS MAY HAPPEN TO YOU LIKE IT DID TO ME! "

  1. We're introducing a new taxi app(SAYTAXI) that let's a user hail a cab with just one tap. You can see on a map all available drivers in your area as well as their names and cab make and registration. You can now connect directly with a taxi driver. As soon as we have enough participating drivers in your area, we'll release the passenger app. Taxi revolution is finally here.

You don't have to log in to use this app........

  5. Guess what, there is growing competition targeting Uber?

"The taxi app wars are about to get a whole lot more interesting. German taxi startup mytaxi, founded in 2009 and currently operating in six markets with 10 million app downloads under its belt, is planning to switch from taking a fixed-fee cut of taxi journeys to a marketplace model where drivers choose the percentage revenue per journey to give over. Pricing can be set at between 3 percent and 30 percent of the final fare.

Driving jobs are then assigned by mytaxi taking the level of revenue share into consideration. mytaxi is claiming this real-time bidding system is the first example of an auction model being applied in the taxi industry."

They simply don't have enough calls, their rate at $1.50 a mile is too low and their %20 commission cut is too high.
though, The idea of Uber is great, but company itself is disconnected from drivers needs as much as owners of every large cab company in US.
      BTW
they practice deceptive advertising too to lure new drivers, by promising $15, $25 , $35 / hour, which is total BS

  10. I like uber in general, but on occasion their system gets really messed up, eg.
it's 3 am , I am only car for the area of 200 square miles and some drunk punk tries to use uber from 20 miles away, -on first 3-4 occasions I pass on the call, but he keeps requesting uber, so I keep receiving same call, even though, he probably gets the message that I am 45-50 minutes away.
In the end I accept the call and after 25 minutes of driving i get to the guy, just to find out, that him and his body are completely drunk, go on $5 run and they start to insult me verbally.. use foul language for not apparent reason. etc.- total mayhem
In my old cab, dispatcher wouldn't give me that call in first place, but if for some reason I would end with those 2 in my taxi, I would have an option to kick them out or call cops, but with uber I can not do that, because they can give me negative feedback, which they probably did anyway.
Too bad, that uber doesn't make information about negative feedbacks from customers accessible to drivers, -anyway, after this trip, my rating went down from 5 stars to 4.9.....

  11. Customer and possible Uber driver point of view:

"I just signed up with Uber and according to their app, my credit card will be charged $1.5 a mile ($5 minimum)
Good for a passenger, but not so good for a driver

    Driver expenses:
after paying 20% fee to Uber , which is $0.30,
~$0.25 per mile on every mile driven (even those w/o fare :() in gas
~ $0.10 @ mile in repairs and maintenance
taxi or limo insurance for legal operation ( $3.700-$5.500 a year)
car payments of about $500-700 a month for over 4 years,( if you want to drive nice new car)
and you are left with about $0.40 -$0.50 profit without any benefits or security and with high risks.
eg. if you lose this crappy job, you wont get unemployment benefits and you still will be stuck with your car payments.

By Dara Kam Thu, Apr 3, 2014 @ 6:55 pm

An uber-fight has erupted in the Capitol involving Ashton Kutcher, black cars and carpetbaggers.
The skirmish between San Francisco-based Uber Technologies --- the smart phone app that hooks up cars and riders --- and the Florida Taxicab Association is a classic turf battle with a stylish, high-tech twist.

Uber basically wants to do away with minimum fares for limousine services, which range from $50 in Tampa Bay to $125 in Miami, and get rid of other local regulations like minimum wait times --- one hour in Miami --- and caps on limousine licenses that the company says hurt consumers.

Uber brought its battle to the Capitol after being thwarted in Miami-Dade County and Hillsborough County, where local officials have refused to rewrite rules regulating taxis and limousines to make it easier --- and more lucrative --- for Uber to get “black cars” rolling. The only city in Florida where Uber is now operating is Jacksonville, which changed its regulations to accommodate the company last fall.

Kevin Valsi, general manager of Uber in Jacksonville, said the company has had “tremendous week-over-week growth” in service requests and completed trips. He said the company doesn’t actually own any of the limousines it has on the road, but contracts with licensed professionals who meet Jacksonville standards."

I would like to remind you, that uber operates in Florida illegally and breaks all the existing laws pertaining to public transportation
