"UberX drivers turn in company phones, effectively going on strike

by Graham Johnson

SEATTLE —
More than a hundred Seattle UberX drivers turned in their company cellphones on Wednesday, effectively going on strike because of a pay dispute with the company.
Drivers are upset about Uber's 20 percent fare cut earlier this month and say it is making it more difficult for them to earn a living.
Because they are independent contractors, Uber drivers cannot unionize. But they have formed the Seattle Ride-Share Drivers Association to collectively pressure the company.
City Councilmember Kshama Sawant spoke at a meeting in support of the drivers Wednesday.
The attorney representing the association told KIRO 7 Uber drivers are paid 80 percent of the fare, and when the company reduced the price, drivers have been forced to work longer hours for the same pay.
The company told KIRO 7 it has more than 1,000 in the Seattle area........"

  1. that's the way to deal UBER,- drivers need to create union or association and make all the disputes public, so the people know what kind of company UBER really is

    1. yeah that's a good idea, -the problem is that mass media are in pocket of UBER and they tend to put spin on news like that "the drivers are making more money because of higher demand, so they can work at lower rates" while F$%#@#@ Uber is making more $$$$$$$$$$$ and gaining market share over all other form of transportation
Uber is corporate monopoly at birth, without any moral principles.............

    2. IMO, local authorities should do something about Uber, either ban them from operating in Pinellas and Hillsborough Counties or make them to operate legally.

  2. Uberx is about to lower rates in Tampa Bay from $1.50 down to $1.20........
.....what about drivers? and their expences?

".........LOWERED PRICES = MORE DEMAND THAN EVER

Uber's summer rider promotion is coming to an end, so to continue record growth on uberX, we’re decreasing uberX prices by roughly 20%. Cancellation fees will not change. The new rates, effective Thursday, August 28th at 5pm, are as follows:

    Base: $1.25
    Per mile: $1.20
    Per minute: $0.13
    Minimum trip: $4.00
    Cancellation fee: $5.00

    1. If they really wanted to go on strike, they should keep the phones, clog up busiest part of town on busiest day and refuse all the calls
..........but before doing that, they should contact some independent media not associated with Uber, to get
      free news coverage

  4. Why uber drivers refuse to take my call?

  5. There are some reasons why uber drivers would refuse your call

#1 your pick up address is too far away from their current location
#2 they know you are constantly going on $4 trips and don't tip
#3 for some reason, you are pain in the butt customer
#4 Uber rates per mile just went down again
#5 Your pick up address is not complete
#6 you're trying to request uber about closing time of local bars and you are drunk
#7 previous ride of your uber driver was an asshole and he assumes that you are an asshole too
#8 why? I don't know,- they don't have obligation to pick you up, they are not taxi service
    #9................

IF YOU WANT PROMPT SERVICE WITH UBER AND YOU ARE REGULAR CUSTOMER, TIP YOUR UBER DRIVER IN CASH, IT IS STILL GOING TO BE CHEAPER THAN TAXI

    1. #9 You're at the airport, and the driver has no way to find you. The drivers screen says "Tampa International Airport" , nothing more. They give you a fictitious Oregon # to call or text the driver, and the driver has the same number for you. You can't communicate. The Driver says, "Screw it", he's not going to waste his time and gas circling in the airport to find a needle in a haystack.

he left his uber iphone in the bathroom or in his car?
      #11
he drives for Lyft too, and since it's a busy day, he prefers to wait for Lyft call?

  6. Uber drivers in New York plan to strike and shut off their phones to protest low fares and treatment by the company
Drivers are unhappy that a '20percent reduced promotional fare' introduced in July is now running indefinitely
Drivers say they want options that allow customers to tip and for the Uber rating system to be fairer
